architectural photography in China: Guangzhou Opera House by Zaha Hadid Architects

As you probably already know if you read our blog regularly, there isn’t a sexy building we can resist. So while in Guanzghou last month, we just *had to* drop by Zaha Hadid’s Opera House, which opened its doors in 2010. When we were planning our trip to Guangzhou we didn’t foresee the obstacles that would impede our way though. First, an architectural photographer’s worst enemy: featureless gray skies were the norm during our entire time in the city.  Second: access…With respect to the weather, our lucky star came through for us just enough to snap a few decent exterior as we managed to get a couple of short windows with blue sky. With respect to access, it was a whole other story. We had hoped to secured some level of access while in town. However, we were limited to a very rushed and controlled lightning fast 30-minute tour of the interior. So, all the interiors you see in this post (and gallery) were simply read and react shots that we managed to fire off during that tour…

From the architects:

” At the heart of Guangzhou’s cultural sites development, a lasting, state of the art monument to the new millenium overlooking the Pearl River. Its contoured profile, unique twin boulder design and approach promenade enhances urban function, opes access to the riverside and dock areas and creates a new dialogue with the emerging town.”
