Architectural Photographs of the Centennial College Athletic and Wellness Centre in Toronto by Kongats Architects
Toronto firm Kongats Architects recently commissioned us to photograph the Centennial College Athletic & Wellness Centre (AWC) in Toronto’s Scarborough suburb. Kongats Architects is gaining a national reputation for the innovation they bring to a wide range of important educational, cultural and public institutions. The firm’s work has been honoured with several awards including the Governor General’s Medal for Architecture in 2002 and 2012 and several Ontario Association Of Architects Architectural Excellence Awards.
The AWC brings together a massive gymnasium, an 80-metre indoor track, two-storey climbing wall, squash courts, cardio-fitness area and aerobic studios under one roof. It is built to LEED Gold certification with numerous eco-friendly features. It reuses much of the structure of the old DEL gymnasium, reducing the carbon footprint, waste and cost; there’s less reliance on electric lighting thanks to the abundance of windows; and rainwater and grey water are collected and used to flush the toilets and help keep the building cool.
