Late last summer, we read that an interesting new park had opened under the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto. Yes, under.
Underpass Park is “part of an ongoing effort to transform pockets of neglected urban spaces on the waterfront into valued public amenities”, according to WATERFRONToronto. The space boasts a basketball court, skate park, playground equipment, benches, flexible community space and public art by Paul Raff Studio.
Further investigation lead to us to the innovative Vancouver firm Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg, who designed the park in conjunction with the Planning Partnership. Long story short, we ended up with a commission in Toronto in early September to shoot phase one of this award-winning space for them. It was a very dreary week and we were lucky to catch a sunny afternoon amongst all the grey days!
We can’t wait to see the entire project when Phase 2 is completed in 2013.
